How to reach Kutch
Plan as if you are going to Bhuj. Almost every day cluster on this site is measured from there. Most people arrive by train into Bhuj, fly into Bhuj or Mundra, or take a bus from Ahmedabad.
By train
Bhuj railway station (station code BHUJ) is the useful rail head. Several long-distance trains terminate here, so you are not changing at Gandhidham unless you choose to. Overnight arrivals work well: you can start a town morning or a Rann day without losing a travel day.
Trains that commonly come into Bhuj include:
- Kutch Express (22955 / 22956) — daily between Mumbai Bandra Terminus and Bhuj, via Ahmedabad.
- Sayaji Nagari Superfast (20907 / 20908) — daily between Mumbai (Dadar) and Bhuj, also via Ahmedabad. Often one of the faster Ahmedabad–Bhuj options.
- Ahmedabad–Bhuj Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (94801 / 94802) — a daytime unreserved service between Ahmedabad Junction and Bhuj, most days of the week.
- Palanpur–Bhuj Intercity (20927 / 20928) — daily, useful if you are already in north Gujarat.
- Ala Hazrat Express (14311 / 14312, and the 14321 / 14322 pair) — from Bareilly and the Delhi side, a few days a week, via Ahmedabad or Mahesana depending on the number.
- Delhi–Bhuj Express (19403 / 19404) — Delhi Junction to Bhuj.
- Weekly or less frequent trains from Mumbai Bandra Terminus (including the 12959 / 12965 family and the AC Superfast 22903 / 22904) and from Shalimar / Kolkata (22829 / 22830).
Book on IRCTC and treat names and days as a starting list, not a timetable. Specials appear and disappear in the Rann season.
By air
Kutch has two passenger airports that matter for a visit: Bhuj and Mundra. International travellers still usually land in Mumbai or Ahmedabad first, then connect.
Bhuj Airport
Bhuj Airport (BHJ) sits a short drive from town — typically under half an hour to the centre. It is the simpler arrival if you are basing yourself in Bhuj for the Rann, Dholavira or the west. Domestic connections have historically run via Mumbai and other Indian hubs, and the roster is thin: confirm the current airline and days before you lock hotels.
Mundra Airport
Mundra Airport (MDA) on the south coast now has scheduled commercial flights (Star Air and any later operators). Recent routes have included Mumbai, Goa, Surat, Hindon (Delhi NCR) and Ahmedabad. Schedules are still building, so check the airline before you plan around a specific day.
Mundra is not a substitute for being in Bhuj. Town is about 70–80 km and 1.5–2 hours away. If your first day is Mandvi, landing at Mundra can be convenient — Mandvi is much closer than Bhuj. If the White Rann or palaces come first, Bhuj airport saves you a transfer.
By bus from Ahmedabad
You do not need a car or a train ticket. Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) runs frequent buses from Ahmedabad to Bhuj — day services and overnight sleepers. The road is roughly 330–400 km depending on the route; most buses take about 7–9 hours.
Board in Ahmedabad at the main ST stands (Gita Mandir is the usual starting point; some services also pick up at other city stops). You arrive at Bhuj bus station, in town. Book on the official GSRTC site or app. Private operators run the same corridor if the state buses are full.
An overnight bus from Ahmedabad is the cheapest simple option if you are already in Gujarat and do not want to fuss with rail quotas.
By car
Self-drive and hired cars both work in winter. Ahmedabad to Bhuj is the same 7–8 hour road as the bus. For Dholavira and western Kutch you want a driver who knows the distances, or a very early start.
Once you are in Bhuj
- North to the White Rann and villages — 40–85 km
- South-west to Mandvi — about 60 km
- East to Dholavira — about 230 km, its own day
- West to Lakhpat and the temples — a full loop
