Rann Utsav
Rann Utsav is the official winter festival staged at Dhordo, next to the White Rann. It usually runs through the cool months — often from late November into February — with tents, craft, food and evening programmes. Exact dates change every year. Check the current season before you book.
What it is, and what it is not
It is a managed festival ground. It is not the whole of Kutch. Hodka, Nirona, Bhujodi and Mandvi still exist on festival weeks. Use the Rann and villages day so the salt desert does not replace the villages.
Staying in the tent city
Packages at Dhordo are convenient if you want sunset without the drive back to Bhuj. They are not the only way to see the Rann. Many visitors sleep in Bhuj or a village stay and come out for the afternoon.
Crowds
Weekends and late December are the heaviest. If you care about photographs on the flats, aim for a weekday and arrive before the last light, not after a packed morning elsewhere.
If you can wait about a month after the festival closes, rooms are cheaper and Dhordo is quieter. The stalls will be gone — they were expensive anyway — and the villages are the better use of that time. See best time to visit.
